Highlights: Port of Ogdensburg

A good example of innovation at work within the Great Lakes / Seaway System took place at the Port of Ogdensburg, New York during the 2008 season. The Port of Ogdensburg successfully managed the handling of a special project cargo of 86 Siemens wind turbines for Canadian Hydro Developers’ Wolfe Island Wind Farm project.

The Port received 11 Beluga ships loaded with the Siemens cargo from Denmark. The cargo was offloaded and placed into temporary storage in the Port’s 36-acre Foreign Trade Zone 118 lay down yard. The project was facilitated by Canadian Projects, Ltd., Calgary on behalf of the cargo owner. Ship unloading and barge reloading was handled by Mammoet and the Port’s longshoremen.

Beginning in mid-summer, barging operations began to ferry the turbines to Wolfe Island – a 10-hour voyage along the St. Lawrence Seaway and Lake Ontario. Each complete turbine had to be loaded on specialized trucks and then loaded onto barges operated by McKeil Marine, Hamilton, Ontario. Over 86 barge trips to the Island were required, and all the turbines were to be shipped by the close of the Seaway at the end of December. "The project came to a successful conclusion and the Port of Ogdensburg is proud to have participated in a project that demonstrated such innovation and cooperation from all parties involved,” said John Rishe, Director of Development at Port of Ogdensburg.

In addition to the windmill cargo, the Port also handles a variety of bulk cargos at its multi-modal rail and marine terminal facility, including: road salt, corn gluten, dried distillers grain, cottonseed and citrus pulp. The Port of Ogdensburg has also handled numerous other cargos, including specialized heavy lift cargo, corn, zinc concentrate, talc, marble chips and wollastonite.
