Sustainability
Marine transportation is an environmentally conscious transportation solution.
For example, a single Seaway-sized laker can carry about 25,000 tonnes of cargo. To carry an equivalent amount of cargo on land, you would need to assemble a fleet of 870 large trucks or 225 rail cars.
The marine mode of transportation exhibits the best fuel economy of any mode. For every kilometre that a vessel carries a tonne of cargo, marine transportation is more energy efficient and emits fewer CO2 emissions than other modes of transport.
Shipping via the Seaway alleviates traffic congestion, and reduces road maintenance and repair costs.
The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System shipping community is working with environmental agencies and governments to further its environmental stewardship.
