Seaway Radio Message #14 - 2009 Closing
This is the final Radio Message for the 2009 closing period.
One way navigation is in effect in the Wiley-Dondero and South Shore canals and in certain areas of the Beauharnois canal. More detailed information may be obtained from the respective Traffic Control Centre.
It is extremely important that vessels transiting through the Beauharnois canal proceed at the slowest safe speed in order not to disturb the ice fields.
Ice breaker services are available in the Montreal-Lake Ontario section.
The removal of navigation aids in the Montreal-Lake Ontario section is in progress; more detailed information may be obtained from the respective Traffic Control Centre.
Mariners are advised that the implementation of the power to length ratio restrictions and minimum draft requirements, scheduled for December 12, are postponed until further notice.
It is important for mariners to note that any vessel which now calls in upbound at CIP2 will be designated a wintering vessel in accordance with all the terms outlined in Seaway Notice No. 8 of 2009.
Mariners are advised that the Montreal-Lake Ontario and Welland Canal drafts outlined in Seaway Notice 1 of 2009 remain in effect until the end of the navigation season.
Water temperature at St. Lambert on December 24, is 0.1 degrees Celsius. Last year’s temperature was 0.2 degrees Celsius. The ten year average is 0.8 degrees Celsius.
At midnight December 23, the number of ocean vessels above St. Lambert was 6 as compared to 9 in 2008. Above Port Weller the number was 1 as compared to 5 in 2008.
The Prescott/Ogdensburg ice boom opening has been reduced to 600m and is indicated by quick flashing green and red buoys.
All closing procedures outlined in Seaway Notice No. 8 of 2009 remain in effect.
